New command for Korean Back Dash

About

Lately, Monga-munga-san found that now you can Korean Back Dash with command: instead of .

“Korean Back Dash can be done with . The second for the first back dash input can be also used for the second back dash.”

It’s not sure when this specification has come out, but for it was the same in Tekken 8 Demo version, so it seems it’s since Tekken 8 launch.

Formerly when some players have a misunderstanding that Korean Back Dash can be done with input, we have to correct it…but now we don’t.

In this article I will explain this new Korean Back Dash input, and also old input.

About old command

In Tekken 7 and before, Korean Back Dash can only be done with input:

Here, I will show both input and actual move in Tekken 6 and after(which have key input display function in practice mode), using TAS.

Tekken 6

In Tekken 6, when you input like this,

that is , the actual movement is like this:

We can see that Jin does not back dash when the third has been input. Which means you cant Korean Back Dash with this command.

Next when you input like this,

that is :

Now Jin does Korean Back Dash. In slow motion, pay attention to the moment that Jin does back dash when the fourth has been input. After that, Jin does back dash when sixth, eighth… has been input.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

It’s the same in TTT2 and Tekken 7.

With this input:

The second back dash does not come out.

While with this input, Jin does Korean Back Dash.

Tekken 7

Same in Tekken 7.

Tekken 8

Now let’s try input in Tekken 8.

In Tekken 8, Jin can do Korean Back Dash whit this input.

You can Korean Back Dash with old input as well.

Conditions for new command

There are some conditions for this new input.

  • The third input should be done in 19Fs or below from the second input.
  • If input is more than 1F, you need the same or more frames for next .

These are known at this time, but there may be further conditions.

The former conditon resembles that of normal back dash(), which is “the second input should be done in 20Fs or below from the first input,” though there’s 1F of difference.

When doing Korean Back Dash, you will not input for this long frames, so we may not have to care about this condition much.

For the latter conditon, this would cause problem sometimes. So we should try not to input for long frames.

If you input for some frames, it would lead to the violation of the former condition: 19Fs. Considering this, we may have to input in… maybe about 2Fs or less.

By the way, input like , using instead of is not possible.

Why the wrong command is so popular (in Japan)

In Japan, the wrong command is really popular, though I’m not sure how it’s like world wide. The main reason for this is that when you use joysticks and try to input , you will almost always input after before .
So this is mechanical issue. It’s really difficult using joysticks and input without going through , especially after inputting . We will never need to use this strange input in regular play, and won’t practice it. Some top level players in other games, such as sako-san(in case of Japanese players) who has insane technique, may input this intentionally.

In conclusion, people who remember wrong command thinks they know and doing the wrong input, but actually they are doing the correct input. It’s only natural since they can’t do KBD with wrong command.

Another theory is that when teaching KBD to someone, it may be easy to tell the command is . The correct command, especially part would be difficult for beginners and may lead to awkward input. So thinking it’s would help them to input quite naturally and in shorter frames.

I know some cases that top class players actually teaching beginners this wrong input. Sometimes a little lie can be useful. I reccomend teaching correct input and telling them that thinking would be easier, however.

Influence of new command

So now we can omit a input in Korean Back Dash. It’s not sure yet how it will affect our actual play. However, we can guess that even if we can input new command correctly, since we have been inputting in quite short frames, total speed of KBD won’t change much. That means influence would be limitted.

I have post this in X(Twitter).

This footage shows an extreme example using TAS, but it seems this led to misunderstanding that new input contributes to the KBD speed very much, which isn’t the fact, so I’m reflecting on this. I’ve never expected it would spread this much.

The reason why It’s really fast is that Doragunov is a character who has one of the fastest back dash in the game, and the input is kind of “just input KBD” which means input comes just 9〜10Fs after (when using Dragunov). I’m not really sure this is the fastest input for him, for I haven’t tried all the patterns though.

This “just frames” should differ according to the character, but needs more investigation.

New command with various control devices

As earlier noted, using joystick isn’t good for new input.

Gamepad would be better. If it’s possible with input like it would be great but it isn’t.

The leverless controllers would be suited to new input. Formally when doing input , we had to keep pressing button and then press button for only a moment. Now when pressing and releasing button, we can release button at the same frame. If one had difficulties in doing input and had some frame loss, new input would help to speed up.

Summary

It seems in Tekken 8, Korean Back Dash isn’t an essential technique anymore, but I think there are players who want to acquire it, so I hope this post would help.

By the way, I want to know why this technique is called “Korean Back Dash” world wide. It’s called “Yamada Step” in Japan(though we never know who Yamada is😱). Please tell me if you know the origin of the name: My X(Twitter) account.
